HAMKA was born in the middle of a religious Muslim family. His father, Abdul Karim bin Amrullah alias Haji Rasul, was a pioneer of the Islamic reform movement in Minangkabau. His father was also registered as the founder of Sumatra Thawalib, the first modern Islamic school in Indonesia. This is where HAMKA learns religion and Arabic after stopping at a second grade elementary school. Although he did not complete his education in elementary school, the HAMKA scholarship was recognized by the world which made him a Doctor of Professor. He obtained a Professor degree from Jakarta Mustopo University, while he received the title Doctor of Honoris Causa from two major universities, namely Al-Azhar University Cairo and Nationality University Malaysia. While the name Buya is attached to its name, it is a call of honor for the Minangkabau people.
During his life, Buya HAMKA spent his time as a journalist, writer and teacher. He was also involved in politics through the Islamic-based Masyumi party before the party was finally dissolved. In addition, he was also noted to have held several important positions such as the first MUI chairman and became the Executive Advisor of the Muhammadiyah Center. On July 24, 1981 in Jakarta, Buya HAMKA took his last breath at the age of 73.
